Saskatchewan Library Week
To celebrate Saskatchewan Library Week, the library staff has organized the following events:
The www.mysmhs.com Bookmark Promotion
All students and staff have received a bookmark to promote the new St. Mary High School blog (My St. Mary High School) available at http://www.mysmhs.com/. The bookmark lists useful websites, usernames and passwords and has a QR code that can be read by any smartphone (download of QR code reader app is required). The bookmark also has four digits on it. Listen for the daily digits and collect your reward at the library during the breaks.

Students are invited to create a PowerPoint slide that promotes a book available at the SMHS library. The slide must be emailed to smhslibrary@cec.pacsd6.sk.ca by Friday at 3:30 p.m. Each slide is an entry into a student draw, as well as towards a classroom participation reward. These PowerPoint slides will be displayed on the TV's in the Commons.

Staff are invited to submit a title of a book available at the SMHS library. The library staff will then create and laminate an image of the book jacket for the staff member to display in a classroom or office. Each book title is an entry into a draw.

Free Rice
On this Thanksgiving Day . . . let us give thanks . . . and our support . . .
The United Nations World Food Programme has created a website, Free Rice, to promote education and to fight world hunger. Companies from around the world will donate 10 grains of rice for each question that is answered correctly. Questions are categorized into different subjects (languages, geography, humanities, math, chemistry, English) and different levels.

The Parkland Region Health District needs our support! Staff at the Victoria Hospital have created a video for a North American contest. The prize is $10 000.

Terry Fox: Pulling for a Cure
The numbers are in . . . St. Mary High School has raised more than $3 300 for the Terry Fox Foundation.
On Wednesday, September 29th, students and staff competed in the annual "Pulling for a Cure" event. The challenge consisted of four teams pulling a 13 048 kg Hertz Northern bus for 25 m . . . uphill.
Each team had an honourary cancer survivor, as well as 15 males and 15 females:
Team Volleyball: Packet of Power (Jackie Packet/Lynn Gaudet)
Team Cross Country: The Fleury (Shirley Fleury/Arlene Town)
Team Drama: Family Fans (Rob Tessier/Jason Van Otterloo)
Team Staff: Wilson Winners (Doris Wilson/Noreen Pearson)

"St. Mary High School took on a Terry Fox Challenge that was a feat of strength and endurance truly worthy of Terry Fox. In honour of staff battling cancer, students and staff teamed up to pull a 13,048 kg school bus and raised over $4,000. Terry once said, "Anything is possible if you try." Our friends at St. Mary High School proved just how true that is."

Banned Book Week was celebrated this week in the United States. The books featured this week had, at one time, been challenged or banned as they were deemed inappropriate for school libraries.
The following novels were promoted on the television screens and are available in the school library:

Scholastic Book Orders
Once again, the library staff is offering the opportunity for students and staff to purchase books, computer software, bookmarks and other supplies from Scholastic Canada.
The September Scholastic Book Order fliers are now available in the library. The orders are due by Wednesday, September 21st.
